Linking up with landscape industry

Why not find out what our industry members are doing and thinking by inviting commentary on a blog?

Your current council President, following in the able footsteps of Garrett Webb, John Wilkinson, Steve Nimz, and Danny Nakamura, seeks to energize the sleeping giant: Hawaii's landscape industry.

Our industry news paper, Hawaii Landscape News, is thriving.

Our CLT program is established and running on Hawaii, Kauai and Oahu, with Maui interested in restarting.

Our conferences have been annually more successful and interesting.

Our council meetings are now teleconferenced: anyone who can drive to the local Ag Extension office can attend. Next meeting is January 11, with election of officers, adoption of budget, and finalized plans for May conference.

Our alliance with the Farm Bureau will be tested this spring: we need 8 to 10 activists willing to support the Farm Bureau's legislative program in return for their support for our current key issues: 1) regular statistical reporting on landscape industry by DBEDT or DofLabor; 2) support for new landscape architecture program at UH; 3) CLT's, Certified Arborists, and Certified Tree Workers introduced into State of Hawaii job specifications for landscape and maintenance work; 4) further suggestions from you, our industry participants.

Our social event plan for each island has begun: Kona held one in Waimea in November, over 40 people came, including architects, nurserymen, contractors, and others. State Rep. Cindy Evans spoke, I spoke, and a lively conversation was held about possibilities for the industry.

Next up: Kauai and Oahu. Kauai event will be on January 12, Oahu on January 19. See LICH website for more details. Landscape Architects are especially invited, and nurserymen and contractors need to attend. Let's mix and meet.

Add your comments and questions and thoughts to this blog and let's green up our aina !
